“Dissonance”, firstly I would like to address the title of this photograph, it is very suitable for what is being portrayed. The use of the mask and rope are very much disharmonious especially when placed over the model’s head. The tightness of the rope and mask is revealed by vaguely seeing the facial features through the material, this creates a tension between the viewer and the image. I agree with Aaron, this pose creates a tightness in your own neck as a viewer, making you feel short of breath. This is emphasized by the clenching of the of the fists, made clear through the definition in the wrists, which the detail has been brought out in post-production. Again, this pose may have been stronger if the watch wasn’t present as there would be definition on this arm as well. The wardrobe could be stronger if the t-shirt wasn’t patterned as it does distract from the main focal point of the image, however in post-production the coloring that you changed has created an effect that almost merges with the background. The color of the t-shirt is similar to the mask, so if re-shot it could be interesting to dress the model in something contrasting to the mask to see how much of a change this would make.

The before and after of this image is quite extraordinary, I love the difference that post production has made to the image as it definitely strengthens the overall feel, while not being overdone. The lighting is definitely my favorite part of this image, shooting in the afternoon was a clever choice. The soft light creates small light leaks that add to the dreaminess of the image as well as the light gives off a daze against the trees again adding to that dreamy effect, I love how light leaks through the trees to backlit the subject. Dulling the greens down in the trees and the grass was a good choice as the green could be distracting if left. The red/purple colors brought out adds to the fine art feel, making the image feel surreal. The location chosen for this shot definitely adds to the eeriness of the concept as it is desolate and out in the open forest, I like how the background has a low focal point where you can make out where it is yet the subject is still not taken away from being the main focal point.

Overall, I have really enjoyed critiquing this image. I do believe this is under the fine art category as it leaves the viewer asking many unanswered questions, which is the sign of a great photograph as you don’t want the audience knowing everything. The disturbing concept of this image contrasts with the editing style however it works very well. Thank you for submitting this image, it has inspired me to create some surreal images of my own, I hope to see some more of your work on this website soon.
